I have seen a lot of different horizons over the years. The spectacular splendor and mystery of the universe beyond our sky has always fascinated me.
There is a new commercial about a Mitsubishi green car where the drivers, venture out to the edge of the earth to where that earth meets the sky. The couple stare out at it in awe for a few moments then Allison says, "hey, wanna head back?"
This is a phrase that has affected me quite profoundly in the past few weeks. As the days are getting shorter and shorter until we reach shortest day of the year, it stands as a meaphor for a life that saw the edge of the earth meeting the sky all too soon.
My nephew Taylor teetered along that edge for several days until their was no more energy to stand in the light while the shadows of the long cold bitter winter night took its effect. As I look back..and head back into the normal everyday chores of daily life, I still see that precipice where Taylor stood on the edge of that horizon. It was beautiful and almost inviting, but looked cold, bleak, vast and lonely nonetheless. It was a horizon he had been invited to head back from, but its power compelled him into it. See you on the otherside someday when I am prepared to not head back...
Horizons.
